Well, given how that...individual operates, I wouldn't call this 'almost' - he's used to having control over everything. His life, others' lives. Your life. And right now? You took control back from him. Attacked him of your own volition. It's a nice message, I think.

Whether you defeated him in battle or not, you've done well either way.
